Safety Camera log books help keep small businesses within the Law
March 15, 2009
Small businesses, throughout Lothian and Borders, are set to benefit from a new road safety initiative by the Lothian and Borders Safety Camera Partnership. The Partnership is offering free vehicle log books to any small firm in the area. The log books enable business owners to keep a track of vehicle use and stay within the law.
L&B Safety Camera Partnership Manager, Colin McNeill, said: “Under the terms of the Road Traffic Act 1988 business owners have a responsibility to know who is driving their vehicles at any time. Apart from this legal requirement it is good Health and Safety practice for both business owners and drivers to log details of all journeys.
“We are offering this free tool for small businesses to use in their company vehicles. Drivers will also benefit from this initiative in that it ensures that they will not be blamed for any irresponsible driving by others.”
Transport Supervisor for Blindcraft in Edinburgh, Alan Taggerty, said:"As a company we are aware of our responsibility to keep accurate driver records and these log books are an ideal way of ensuring that we know who the driver was and where the vehicles had been on any given day.
”The drivers themselves appreciate that it’s in their own interest to keep accurate records as they don’t want to be blamed for an offence they didn’t commit.
“We are already using the log books in our vehicles and the road safety information, particularly with regard to speed limits, helps to remind our drivers of the need to watch their speed and to keep within the limits. That’s good for the drivers, good for business and has to be good in terms of road safety.”
The A5 log book contains:
· Vehicle log sheets to keep a record of each journey
· An A4 speed limit poster for display in business premises
· A vehicle speed limit sticker for the dashboard
· Useful information on stopping distances and tips to avoid speeding
Copies of the log books can be obtained by going to http://www.transportlog.co.uk and completing the online order form.
Notes for editors:
The log book campaign is being launched nationally across all eight Scottish Safety Camera Partnerships.
The aims of the Scottish Safety Camera Partnerships are to:
· reduce the number of people killed and injured on Scotland’s roads
· help raise public awareness of the issues and dangers of inappropriate speed
· make speeding as socially unacceptable as drink driving
· change long term driver behaviour in relation to speeding
