New East Lothian Safety Cameras Go Live
July 08, 2010
Three new mobile safety camera sites in East Lothian will go live from this week (19/07/10). This is the first time mobile safety cameras will be deployed to East Lothian.
The three new sites in East Lothian will have the mobile safety camera van visit on a regular basis to ensure drivers stick to the speed limit.
All of the new mobile safety camera sites are located on rural roads where local residents have requested action to be taken about motorists who are exceeding the speed limit and where there is a history of injury collisions.
According to Road Safety Scotland the worst accidents in Scotland happen on rural roads with 3 out of 4 road deaths occurring on them. The most common causes of these fatalities are loss of control and driving too fast for the conditions.
Lothian and Borders Safety Camera Partnership Depute Manager, Julie Roy said:
“Don’t assume it’s safe to break the speed limit on rural roads just because there is less traffic. Roads in rural areas can have many hidden surprises, often the roads have bends that you can’t see round, where you can encounter farm vehicles or, livestock. If you are travelling at high speed you won’t have enough time to stop safely.”
Councillor Barry Turner, East Lothian Council’s Transport spokesman further added: “Speed cameras have been shown to help curb excessive speeding which can lead to serious traffic accidents. East Lothian has some of the most scenic rural routes in Scotland attracting tourists from home and abroad. I am sure that these cameras will help ensure that both residents and visitors enjoy safer driving conditions across the county.”
The deployment of the mobile speed camera is advertised weekly in the local press and can be found on the Partnership’s website: http://www.lbsafetycameras.co.uk
