Mobile camera units to cover community concern sites

April 21, 2009

Mobile safety camera units will be in attendance at five new community concern sites in Edinburgh and Livingston.

Five new ‘community concern’ mobile safety camera sites have been identified in Edinburgh and Livingston.  These sites have been identified following concerns and complaints of speeding from members of the public, local Councils and Lothian and Borders Police.

The five new sites are:

· Willowbrae Road, Edinburgh
· Deans North Road, Livingston
· Braid Road South, Edinburgh
· Redford Road, Edinburgh
· East Fettes Avenue, Edinburgh

Lothian and Borders Safety Camera Partnership Manager, Colin McNeill, said: “Earlier this year we examined 51 sites that had been reported to us as having a speeding issue.  Having checked collision data and carried out speed surveys we examined each site on its own merits and, of the 51, five have now been identified as sites that we will cover with our mobile safety camera units.

“Our teams, in highly visible mobile camera vans, will be covering these new sites over the coming months in that hope they will act as a reminder to drivers to slow down and to keep within the speed limit.  Temporary signage will be placed at each of the locations when our mobile teams are on site.  Our job is not about detecting speeders; it’s about encouraging drivers to keep to a safe speed.“

During the week commencing 27 April mobile cameras will be operating at the following sites in Edinburgh and the Lothians*:

A70 Balerno
A90 Crammond
Muirhouse Parkway
West Granton Road
Willowbrae Road
Comiston Road
A706 Longridge
A706 Carnie Place, Whitburn
A89 Armadale
A71 Polbeth
A71 Breich
A899 Lizzie Bryce
A68 Pathead
A68 Cranston

Mobile camera vans will also be deployed between fixed cameras on the A1, A68 and the A697.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS PARTNERSHIP HAS THE CAPABILITY TO OPERATE ALL GATSO SPEED AND RED LIGHT OFFENCE DETECTION CAMERAS IN THE LOTHIAN AND BORDERS REGION AT ANY GIVEN TIME. THEY CAN DETECT OFFENCES 24hrs A DAY AND DURING HOURS OF DARKNESS AND THEY ARE NOT LANE SPECIFIC.

*Please note that the deployment schedule may be subject to change according to operational priorities.
